The U.S. agricultural sector can play a significant role in helping to reduce U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) while offering multiple ancillary environmental and economic benefits to society and the sector. To fully capture the GHG-reducing benefits from the agricultural sector, federal, regional, and state-level policies must appropriately incorporate agricultural mitigation strategies and technologies.

Biochar is a fine-grained, porous charcoal-like product formed from the thermochemical combustion of biomass. Properly produced and utilized as a soil amendment, biochar offers one of the world’s only carbon-negative technologies for helping to combat global climate change, while also revitalizing and enhancing the health and fertility of the world’s soils.
